RUNNING on LATIN TIME

Saturday, August 14, 2011

Ryan had his first futbol game.
He was supposed to play at 1:oo (coach told the team to be at the field
at 12:30). Jeff had gone to Villarrica
(2 hours away) to help a team mate move.
The kids and I walked to the field (not too far, but far enough with
little legs and in the heat), arriving about 1:30. I knew the game wouldn’t start on time, but I
was afraid I was going to miss seeing Ryan play. We waited and waited and waited. Finally at 4:00, Ryan’s team played (and
lost).

KITCHEN NOVELTIES

'

I was cooking one day while our kids had friends over. When they heard the noise from the mixer, they stopped in their tracks to watch....in awe. They had never seen
anything like that.

Next, I began grating cheese which also drew a crowd. Here we only have homemade cow cheese (which I don't really care for) as an option, but I bring in a mild cheese from Asuncion. I let the kids taste some of my cheese. They didn't liked it.

THIS WEEK

August 2, 2011
I had just wanted to welcome our team mates, the Floyd’s, back after their year of furlough. I served several meals over a couple days while they were settling back in. I also served up a not-so-healthy dose of food poisoning. Well, I guess we can’t be sure that I did it, but all 3 of their kids, 5 of mine and Jeff have been throwing up, stomach ache, feeling tired sick. Cleaning up vomit of 4 kids was not how I planned to spend my 3AM…..motherhood can be so unglamorous at times!

August 3, 2011
Made meat stew for lunch. We gagged at the first bite because it was so sour and not edible (was the pork bad?) Finally late afternoon I realized the mistake – I used 2 cups of lemon juice instead of chicken broth (Frozen in similar looking jars)!

August 4, 2011
We invited and hosted a Paraguay guy to speak at the high school about sexual purity. Please pray that his message fell on open ears and soft hearts. Oh how the teens of the town need this message!

August 6, 2011
Ryan signed up for futbol today. I think it will be great for him. i just hope the other kids playing haven’t had 11 years head start on him – seems they come out of the womb playing futbol here. His cleats were too small for him, but fortunately he fit into Jeff’s shoes (wow!).

August 6, 2011 – had youth over to play minute-to-win-it games. Very fun.

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY, JULIA!

August 5, 2011 - We had a “We love Julia” birthday for Julia. We got out our valentine decorations – heart plates, heart patterned table cloth, and heart ornaments. I found heart balloons which we strung up outside. I made a heart shaped, pink frosted cake. Two missionary families (the Floyds and Reiches) came over. It was simple and sweet.

August 7, 2011 – We continued the celebration Sunday when (as usual) a bunch of kids from church came over to play. We ate pink frosted and heart sprinkled cupcakes. Yum!

Can’t believe Julia is already ONE!
Two bottom teeth and 4 trying to come in on top (poor thing)
Cruising all around, not standing on her own or close to walking
Wearing 12 month clothes
Size 3 shoes
Diaper size medium
Eats most anything put before her
Takes two 2 hour naps a day
Sleeping better at night (now that she is sleeping with Ginny)
Nursing 3 times a day
Waves good-bye
Nicknames: Ju-Jus, Ju-Ju Beans, Beans, Beanies, and Babe (that's what Micah calls her...so cute)
Loves her cell phone toy and holds everything up to her ear as if it is phone
Says mama, dada and a few other “words” that could have several different meanings
16lbs
Love the health care in our town… nurses came to my door today to give Julia her 1 year shots

BOY'S WEEK RULEZ

July 20-26 2011

We live two hours from our nearest English speaking
friends. It can get lonely out here at
times, especial for Ryan who is very social.
I am always grateful for opportunities that the MKs have to hang
out. Recently the “older” missionary
boys were able to spend a week together at the Reich’s house. Boy did they have fun!

PIQUES

Piques are parasitic fleas that live in soil and sand and feed intermittently on warm-blooded hosts. In order to reproduce, the female flea burrows head-first into the hosts' skin, usually around the toe nails. It is recognizable by a black dot with a white egg sack around it. During the first day or two, the host may feel an itching or irritation. As the sack grows bigger under the skin, it may be very irritating.

In Paraguay piques are the norm and we get them quite often (on a daily basis). In fact, if a task is easy, the Paraguayans have a saying that it is as easy as getting a pique out.

CHURCH by NUMBERS

Sunday, July 24, 2011

ONE baptism
TWO huge pots filled with lunch
THREE guests in our house last night
FOUR bible stories shared
FIVE hours of fellowship
SIXteen extra kids came to play at our house after church

Other Sunday (but not so spiritual) news:

I recently heard that three languages are spoken in Paraguay – Spanish, Guarani and futbol. Unfortunately Paraguay lost to Uruguay today in the final game of the World cup. Children
had an extra incentive to root on Paraguay…when they win big games, there’s no
school the following day.

HORSING AROUND

July 18, 2011

Tyler lost his 2nd tooth this week (on bottom) while he and Ginny were paying horse. He had the “reigns” in his mouth.

Tyler said: “Is today tomorrow?”
