RICHMOND, VIRGINIA

Monday, September 28, 2009

We have been blessed to stay three nights with a wonderful family in Richmond (the Outhous’). Their church (which supports a missionary family on our team), sent a group of 11 to Paraguay just this past July to minister to us at our annual Spiritual Life Conference. When they found out we were heading home on furlough they very willingly offered their home to us and we very willingly took then up on that offer. They have four great kids (13 years to college aged) who have jumped on the trampoline, played doctor, played wii, and skate boarded with our kids. And, interestingly enough, the son of our team mates (who are still in Paraguay) is now in college and living with the family who is hosting us. The kids loved seeing Jonathan again after missing and talking about him for the past two years (he made that much of an impression on my kids….and all the younger missionary kids for that matter). Saturday evening we had a reunion with all the folks that came to Paraguay from their church. Another fun blessing was seeing Gina, a gal that had spent a year in Paraguay as a short-termer in 2006.

I feel as if I have drunk 1000 gallons of history in just three days. Friday afternoon we toured the Museum of the Confederacy. Saturday we went to Jamestown and saw the coolest museum ever. Not only did they have neat interactive displays inside which gave a great presentation of the colonial days, but they also had a living museum outside. People were dressed in costume and told stories or about life as it was in those days. They had a community set up that we could walk through. The kids could touch the animal hides and grind corn and they learned about spear making. We also saw the Pocahontas and John Smith statue and the first church at Jamestown.

Sunday we went to Yorktown to yet another museum. This one also had an indoor and outdoor component. Outside the kids loved going from tent to tent learning about the soldier’s base. A soldier shot an English musket for us and let the kids hold the gun. The boys thought that was the coolest thing.
